A Clockwork Orange House
SOLID are excited to be appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers on a project alongside Colledge Architects to input into the repair and renovation of a variety of buildings on the site. Situated within the heart of a popular Cotswold village, the existing buildings fall into a conservation area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so sympathetic design is essential.
Stout & Litchfield - A Clockwork Orange House
The buildings sit alongside a selection of notable buildings, the most noteworthy being ‘New House’. ‘New House’ was designed and built in 1964 by architects ‘Stout and Litchfield.’ The property is of architectural interest due to it being perceived as an important and innovative example of 1960s domestic architecture. New House is made entirely of local Cotswold stone and slate yet is modern in design and incorporates mono pitched roofs. The interior also demonstrates innovation through its unusual plan of pavilion links with rotational symmetry. New House was used to film harrowing scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’.
Japanese Gardens
The property also features a stunning Japanese garden which was listed in 2012 because its layout and design are of particular quality – combining Japanese garden design with modernist design principles. It is a rare example of an early 1960s modernist Japanese style garden laid out by the modern abstract painter Viacheslav Atroshenko and a team of Japanese gardeners, led by Mr Kasamoto. Viacheslav Atroshenko’s artist brother Paul Atroshenko also painted an abstract mural on the garden wall, which adds to the artistic merit.
We are still in the very early stages of the development, but we look forward to updating you on the project, and College Architect’s unique design in the coming weeks.
