Rebellion Studios
The entertainment sector looks to extend its reach outside the M25 with several high profile studios already established in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Recent reports in the media announced that plans are underway for a massive new studio just outside Marlow on 85 acres of former excavation land at the Westhorpe junction on the A404 whilst planning has been approved for a new 4,800sqm TV Studio at the Thames Valley Science Park in Reading. All these locations offer close proximity to London and Heathrow airport.
One of the big players is Rebellion Studios, known for the development of games such as Sniper Elite, Zombie Army and Evil Genius, the production of feature films and programmes like Maleficent, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Dr Who and the publication of comic books like the Judge Dredd series.
SOLID have been working with Rebellion Studios following the acquisition of the 20,000 sqm former printworks building in Didcot in 2018. We have been involved in the new 3,000 sqm x 20m high temporary stage building and our civil engineers are working on the surrounding roads and drainage.
The scale of the former industrial building will allow Rebellion Studios to offer drive-in capabilities and more than 20ft height clearance in the largest of the six stages. Once completed, Rebellion Studios's facility in Didcot will have created a self supporting system of entertainment companies offering the full range of services from virtual production, in-house visual effects, CGI and animation to motion capture, game production; and film and television production. Associated facilities will include a screen theatre, a large canteen big enough to look after the needs of film crews and dressing rooms and production offices around each stage.
