Kings Walk & Eastgate Shopping Centres - Structural Survey
Atriums
Our recent surveys of two of Gloucester’s key shopping centre atriums — at Kings Walk and Eastgate — revealed the intricate structures behind these light-filled public spaces. At Kings Walk, our detailed inspection combined internal surveys, ceiling void access, and roof-level investigations to reveal the impressive steel framework supporting its glazed roof. Alternating pin-jointed CHS steel trusses, supported by reinforced concrete columns and ring beams, create an elegant structure, with additional concealed elements within the roof build-up.
In comparison, Eastgate’s atrium, a single-level glazed space from the late 1960s/early 1970s Kings Square redevelopment, features welded CHS steel elements integrated directly into the glazing system. Its large rectangular plan, set above the main circulation floor, channels natural light deep into the shopping centre. Together, these surveys have illustrated how each atrium carries its load and provided valuable insight for future maintenance planning, ensuring these vibrant spaces remain for many future visitors to enjoy.
Eastgate Portico
The Eastgate Portico, a historic landmark fronting the shopping centre, showcases fine craftsmanship and enduring structural integrity. Our visual survey examined its Corinthian columns, pediment, and arched bell turret, identifying key load-bearing elements and areas requiring sensitive repair. This careful work will help ensure the portico remains a proud feature of Gloucester’s streetscape for generations to come.
Kings Walk Link Bridge
Spanning the route between Kings Walk Shopping Centre and its multi-storey car park, the elevated link bridge is a product of late 1980s engineering. Our inspection documented its reinforced concrete deck and downstand beams, supported by triple aperture tapered concrete columns. The bridge supporting an enclosed walkway constructed by a series of steel portal frame comprises of PFC rafters and channel horizontal bracing. We found the original construction to be highly durable, with a few targeted maintenance actions recommended to safeguard this busy pedestrian link well into the future.
