Hook Norton Stable Reopens

We are proud to see the historic Hook Norton Brewery Stables re-opened to the public after its devastating fire 18 months ago. Drawn in detail, designed to last. The new timber frame uses the original truss ironwork which survived the fire, and were blast cleaned and painted black to play their part in the new structure.

On 20 May 2024, Hook Norton Brewery faced a devastating moment when a fire tore through its historic stable block. Thankfully, no one was injured and the brewery’s much-loved Shire horses were safely out in the fields at the time. The stable block has long been at the heart of Hook Norton’s famous horse-drawn deliveries and its brewing heritage. It also houses the offices of several local businesses.

Following the fire, an extensive programme of restoration and rebuilding began. Plans were approved to reconstruct the fire-damaged building and reinstate its roof and first floor, carefully preserving its historic character. SOLID was appointed as Structural Engineers on the project. We were appointed to provide an initial assessment of the building’s stability and to identify items requiring immediate intervention.

Following this we developed the structural proposals for the partial reconstruction and rebuilding of the stables, including the first floor and roof. Our team worked closely with architect Freehaus and the wider project team to ensure the rebuilt structure respected the historic character of the listed brewery buildings.

The reopening was celebrated in true Hook Norton style on Valentine’s Day, with a special open day. Visitors were able to meet the brewery’s magnificent Shire horses - Balmoral, Brigadier and Cromwell - and learn more about the important role they continue to play in the brewery’s traditions. There was also a horsebox bar serving Hook Norton ales, with all proceeds donated to the Fire Fighters Charity as a gesture of thanks to those who helped during the devastating fire. It was a fitting and memorable way to celebrate the return of the horses to their beautifully restored home.

The formal official opening was subsequently marked by a visit from The Princess Royal in July 2026, when she toured the newly restored Stable Courtyard, met the people involved in the restoration and met the three Shire horses.
