UK Property Award Winner

We are thrilled to hear that Stoke Gap House has won The Best Single Residence in Northamptonshire in the UK Property Awards. Designed and submitted by William Green Architects, the property is a prime example of how contemporary architecture can sit beautifully alongside a traditional home.

Grade II Listed Alterations

The original property was a Grade II Listed double-fronted Georgian home which, whilst beautiful, did not meet the requirements for modern family life. The kitchen was tucked away at the back of the house and the flow felt disjointed. William Green Architects were appointed to reconfigure the internal arrangements and design a modern pool and gym extension.

The sympathetic changes to the original building, whilst relatively small, have made a huge impact on family life. The kitchen is now at the heart of the home and flows seamlessly into the new dining room, and then onto the pool room. The contemporary link may be modern in appearance, but William Green Architects designed it to blend seamlessly. SOLID were appointed to help this design become a reality. To sit so comfortably the extension needed to be a light, open structure, with sliding glazed walls to open onto the south facing terrace.

Structural Design

To maintain the feeling of openness and weightlessness the new extension has been designed as a contemporary steel structure with two elegant, tied frames each aligning with a hip apex. The ties are designed as tension tie rods with a central disc offset up from the horizontal. The steel work also frames a central glass rooflight with a clear unsupported ridge.
