The challenge

Sitting against the Grade II listed Stokegap House, extension was conceived as a very light open structure reflecting the existing house in form but contrasting it in solidity.

The SOLID Approach

To maintain the feeling of openness and weightlessness, the new extension has been designed as a contemporary steel structure with two elegant tied frames each aligning with the hip apex. The ties are designed as tension tie rods with a central disc offset up from the horizontal. The steel work also frames a central glass roof light with a clear unsupported ridge.
