Stone Barn Completes
A Stone Barn Conversion
Our stone barn project has completed on site, and we can now share finished images with you. As projects go, this one threw up a few challenges, but you know the SOLID team – we love a challenge! Originally a traditional farm building, our client wished to convert the existing barn, whilst retaining the original features, and extend it by adding a new basement under half of the footprint.
BIM Modelling
This was not a straightforward task, and the SOLID team approached the challenge in stages. Initially we constructed a piled wall across the width of the building, forming the back wall of the new basement, and excavated two further footings to hold a steel frame.
Using BIM modelling we designed the steel frame to hold up the existing barn during the basement construction, so not to lose any of the original structure. The frame inserted a series of steel beams through the walls so that excavation of the basement could begin.
Once the basement was fully constructed the steel frame was then removed, but it did not go to waste. The main steel members were then reused as permanent steel beams to support the roof over the new basement.
Maintaining the Original Barn
Now complete, the property is an exemplary example of a luxurious barn conversion. With stone floors and exposed stone walls, it brings the expected rustic atmosphere but with modern conveniences and opulent interior design for ultimate comfort. We are particularly proud of the fact that the original barn construction was left untouched, with every stone and traditional feature maintained. The modern additions were implemented to emphasise the barn’s natural beauty, rather than overpower it.
On top of the basement is a roof terrace which provides spectacular views over dramatic countryside, as do the stunning glazed doors. This barn conversion really portrays country living at its absolute best.
